I read the "Screwtape Letters" at work today. I'd never read them before and thought it was really good. The theme I caught most powerfully was Selfishness. It seemed to be everywhere. What did you think when you read it?
I thought Screwtape was devious in how he would use distraction, or the idea that it would be better quality if the person did it later on. . . then keep distracting.
I like that he doesn't simplify Satan. Some people think that he's only out there turning people into jerks.
We have to remember that every path that is not the straight and narrow one is the Devil's path. If he can get you to shift too far right or too far left he'll have you.
A sweet little old woman who dotes constantly on her cats can be just as distracted from the gospel as the raging alcoholic.
You must read fast. Its been a long time since I read that book, but do you think that C.S. Lewis will be considered an apostle in the next world, since his works are quoted in church talks more than many of the apostles?
The most jarring part for me was hearing Screwtape encourage Wormwood's charge to pray for his amorphous "brothers and sisters" but to despise his next of kin.
