The Tribune article that got me started (please notice the misspelled 2nd word)
My GChat Conversation with Ben later on:
Husben: i re-tweeted your tweet
i liked it a lot
me: thanks
I just talked to the kids coming back from elementary school - they didn't watch it
In Summation: When the President addresses the nation, it's a lot like General Conference. He might introduce a new way of looking at things, but he has to keep it pretty vague to catch everyone who's watching and retain his approval ratings. So he can't really fly off the handle in those situations.
What do people think he is going to make ridiculous socialist statements without thinking of the consequences?
Husben: apparently
what's stupid is that you don't talk to kids about policy, you talk to them about values. and liberals and conservatives do have the same values at heart, they just disagree on how to bring those values to pass.
me: yeah, and these are exactly the kinds of speeches that president's should be giving - addressing the entire nation of young people to encourage them to do their best
me: yeah, and these are exactly the kinds of speeches that president's should be giving - addressing the entire nation of young people to encourage them to do their best
would this happen to any other president?
ALSO - he released the text of the speech on MONDAY so that parents and teachers would know there was nothing bad in it
ARG
Husben: and what if he did say something to forward the liberal agenda? wouldn't this give parents an opportunity to discuss the future of the nation with their kids?

me: Then some 5th graders told me "it's ok if you voted for Obama, it doesn't make you a bad person
me: and I totally agree with your point about values. What conservative doesn't want their kid to learn about working hard and staying in school?

What kind of crazy liberal parents teach their children that voting for Obama doesn't make someone a bad person?
I completely agree with you. As an educator (I love that I am now) we got to choose whether or not to show it during our class at 12 today. There was no outrage where I live, but there was indifference.
My 3 students at noon had homework to do that period and they wanted to finish their homework. I had a moral conflict, because my job is to help them understand and finish their homework. But I really wanted to watch the speech. I wish the school had made it manditory to watch it. I opted to have them work on their homework...I was happy to find out later that the freshmen social studies teachers are making them all read the speech as part of an assignment.
I think it is so cool that Obama wants to influence for good. So many young people look up to him.
I hope I didn't disappoint you Toni with my decision not to show the video.
These are the same people that take Glenn Beck seriously.
Oddly enough, I find that hearing Glenn Beck's voice gives me a Pavlovian craving for alcohol. I guess it fits, though, considering he's a recovering alcoholic.
I needed to fix some typos
I completely agree with you Toni. They didn't show the broadcast here, so the students couldn't be "indoctrinated." I wonder what they are so afraid our elected president would say that would be so offensive. It's troubling to me that too many people are guided by fear instead of information and understanding. We see it in the debate about health care. The shouting matches at the town hall meetings are largely ignited by wild misinformation and a stubborn refusal to listen. What is this nation so afraid of?
