Ben and I often find ourselves subject to sitting in the church pew behind the most disruptive children in the congregation. Today was Stake Conference, that means 2 hours of the most disruptive children. 4 of them, with only 1 guardian, a well trained mother who would allow only a short shriek from any of them before she immediately gave them more crackers, gold fish etc so they would be quiet.
They may have been mostly quiet but they were not reverent, ranging in ages from 7-2, the chaos never ended. By the end of the meeting 2 were missing shoes, one being barefoot, and of 2 ties, none were being worn at the end of the meeting.
I felt bad and wanted to help her but wasn't sure how.

I utilize a couple of methods, first when you are sure the mother isn't watching but one of the kids is, give them a threatening glare. Or offer to pick them up. That usually drives them back to their own space. The other is to start to play with them. If they want to play something and you can be a playmate then it takes some pressure off the mother. It may backfire however when you get tired of playing or the play escalates into some more loud behavior.
